Translational Science Incubator
Successful clinical and translational research requires collaboration among investigators from diverse fields, such as genetics, molecular biology, engineering, bioinformatics and epidemiology. A successful research program also strives to discover new ways to solve clinical problems and shares these new methods with other investigators.
The Boston University Clinical and Translational Science Institute (BU CTSI) operates at a university-wide level, which fundamentally changes the alignment of resources for translational research. BU CTSI also takes a multidisciplinary approach, pulling in experts from other departments, to develop new ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases.
Aims of the Division
To support existing and new translational programs and cores through a network of institutional pilot grants, which involves:
- Identifying promising new ideas and technologies using faculty “site miners”
- Facilitating the multidisciplinary interaction of new investigators
- Funding new interdisciplinary translational science programs with pilot grants
- Introducing scientists to the commercialization process and providing funds to further their technologies
To improve collaborations among existing Boston University scientists. This involves:
- Ensuring state-of-the-art translational technology that is available, accessible and affordable
- Regularly reviewing available technologies and developing new ones as needed, by tracking usage, identifying gaps and eliminating barriers to usage
To facilitate the development of innovative technology that supports translational research. This involves:
- Ensuring state-of-the-art translational technology that is available, accessible and affordable
- Ensuring trainees receive appropriate guidance when using these technologies
- Regularly reviewing available technologies and developing new ones as needed, by tracking usage, identifying gaps and eliminating barriers to usage
- Connecting resources throughout Boston University that serve translational researchers
Pilot Grant Programs
The CTSI provides pilot funding for innovative translational research and the development of innovative translational research methods at Boston University. “Translational research” covers the continuum from the development of new therapies and diagnostic tests to studies of the population health impact of health interventions.
